7-3-09 UpdateWe pulled the boat out of the water today and gave her a bath. As I towed her to the ramp and then drove back to the house I had no fewer than 10 people stop and look at her. It's a pretty cool little boat. She is easy on the eyes.Owner isn't interested in low offers. A number that starts with a 7 will buy her and the deck davits.Classic Wooden Sail Boat. Includes Davits in pictures.Whitehall boats have a long history in American Maritime Heritage as workboats and pleasure craft. Although the type was thought to have originated at the foot of Whitehall Street in New York, similar derivations have been built in all regions of the country. The Whitehall is perhaps the most famous of American workboats and is mentioned in all literature relating to the lives of seamen in the days of tall ships. The Whitehall's were used by ship chandlers, newspaper reporters, insurance adjusters, agents, pilots, ruthless boarding house crimps and all others having business with the shipping industry. The Whitehall was noted for its fine qualities; it rowed easily and moved fast in smooth or choppy water; it was safe, carried a heavy load easily and was dry. The South Haven Whitehall is a modern adaptation of the early boats and retains all the fine qualities of the type. The newer boats are wider and deeper based on the fact that people today are just physically bigger than they were a generation or two ago. The sailboat carries a single gaff rig lugsail. It sets up in five minutes and the spars fit in the boat. One pair of oars is standard but it is great fun to row with two. The sailboat is close winded, forgiving and fast. The Whitehall will forgive beginners and entertain Old Salts alike. The beauty of the boat will attract attention everywhere there is a crowd. Materials: These boats are built the old fashioned way with modern materials. Planking is mahogany marine plywood glued with waterproof epoxy so they will never leak a drop. This makes the boat suitable for sailing off the trailer or from a slip in the water. An attractive combination of sassafras and mahogany is used in the hull and spruce for the spars. Oars are white ash. Sails are Dacron and hardware is either stainless or bronze. The interior of the boat is varnished and the exterior painted with marine quality finishes for a long lasting finish.Jay Jones cell
